Figs, fall fruits, and my poor finger

As those of you who know me in person or follow me on Twitter may know, I had hand (finger, to be exact) surgery early this past week and have spent the rest of the week at home convalescing and slipping in and out of consciousness.  (At the very least, I've been catching up on those precious sleep hours before school starts!)

Typing with one hand is difficult enough, but what really kills me is that I can't *do* anything, either research for school or being in the kitchen or being behind the camera.  I mean, I have complete confidence that I could bake simple things with one hand, but it's doing the dishes afterwards that necessitates two!  :-)  So instead, I've been enjoying the fresh fruits of the season au natural--and what the perfect time to do so!  From some of the sweetest late-season strawberries to exotically subtle South African ice peaches to succulent and delicately rich figs, I've been savoring doing almost nothing to my fruits and just enjoying simply the incredible flavors of the pre-autumn season.

One of my favorite ways to enjoy seasonal fruits is to add them to my morning yogurt, and this is what I've been having this past week: green and purple figs, toasted pistachios, thick, Greek yogurt, and a quick sprinkling of dark brown sugar.  Here's hoping that a few figs a day keep the doctors at bay!  :-)

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!  (as I will probably be sleeping mine away.)

  4. Poor you! My mum has had a few hand surgeries, it's very difficult to do things. Hope you get well soon.

I'm so jealous of the figs - I haven't found any yet this summer. They're so gorgeous.

  5. @Poires au Chocolat: I got really lucky with these figs, because the grower told me I'd stumbled on their last weekend! Had I not gone this past week, I would have sadly missed them as well.

  6. all this with one bum hand? props to you! two autumns ago i grabbed the handle of a skillet that'd just come from the oven and held onto it long enough to put it safely on top of the stove. stupid move looking back, but i really didn't want to clean beets and beet juice off the floor! ha. needless to say i had severe second degree burns and was out of commission for a while -- in the midst of writing my master's thesis no less! hope you're back to your normal self [hand?] soon!

    cheers,

    *heather*

  7. gorgeous photos for someone with the use of 1 hand! i had hand and finger surgery about 6 months ago and didn't expect it to knock me off my cooking schedule so much. it was very strange having to be so dependent on people for help with stuff like washing dishes. but it was nice to be forced to take it easy. get well soon!

  8. I love figs but they're so expensive and hard to catch in VA. Sorry your hand's been out of commission but glad you've had a chance to rest and that you're still enjoying nice treats like this :).

  11. How beautiful! I mean the figs, and eating them with yogurt (not the finger surgery, which just sucks).

  13. Thank you so much for the well-wishes, everyone!

@Frances: I got the wooden board from Kingdom of Herbs in the SF Ferry Building (http://www.kingdomofherbs.com/). It doesn't look like they have an online store, but if you call them, they might be wiling to ship one to you. (FYI, it's an olive cheeseboard.)
